The Annual Eye Examination ? Nobody Who Wears Contacts Can ...

New Health And Fitness.Org - Health Information You Can Use

Regardless of age, contact lenses are, without a doubt, everybody?s favorite alternative to the conventional act of wearing eyeglasses to deal with a vision problem. Anybody can enjoy the benefits of better eyesight with contact lenses, which are easy to use and very convenient. With contact lenses, gone are the days of dealing with glasses. There are a lot of individuals who consider eyeglasses, maybe rather disparagingly, as ?nerd stuff?, but the bottom line is, their wearing contact lenses in lieu of glasses makes them feel better about how they look and how they appear to friends, co-workers, classmates or family members.

Contact lenses can serve an altruistic purpose for the individual ? this is because they obviously are beneficial to the wearer in so many ways, yet at their own expense ? if contact lenses were living, breathing things, such a rhetoric would indeed be valid. There is no excuse for wearing contact lenses yet all too often failing to be cognizant to the responsibility involved in wearing them?

It is sad to note that a lot of individuals take a slapdash approach to how they use and wear their contact lenses. It is all too common for individuals to forgo visiting the eye doctor for several years after they have obtained their much-awaited prescription for contact lenses. In fact, more often than not a person will obtain a prescription for contact lenses and not return to his or her eye doctor for years.

The point is, everybody regardless of age or gender needs to visit an eye doctor at least once on an annual basis in order to guarantee that the health of their eyes is at maintained at all times. In fact, even people who do not wear contact lenses, eyeglasses or any visual aid would still be required to have an eye examination regularly. The urgency of having an annual eye examination, however, would be greatly increased if somebody wears contact lenses.

Let it be known that an annual eye examination is not an elective ? it is an absolutely compulsory process especially if the person is going to wear contact lenses. While more often than not a person?s experiences with contact lenses is positive, there can be serious eye health consequences to the wearing of contact lenses. Eye disease can occur with little to no advance notice, and the consequences to a person?s eyes can be cataclysmic. If a certain damage or disease is detected by a licensed health care professional, he or she will do everything in his/her power to preclude the possibility of more serious damage, or worse, permanent damage to the patient?s eyes.

Once again, if a person elects to wear and use contact lenses, regular eye evaluations and checkups needs to be a part of that person?s annual routine.

Learn the basics of be healthy for a longer, healthier and happier life.

Whitney Houston's voice still soars

(AP) ? After all the testimonials from relatives and friends, the songs from legends and pop stars, the preaching and even laughter, the raw emotion of Whitney Houston's funeral came down to just one moment: The sound of her own voice.

As the strains of her biggest record, "I Will Always Love You," filled the New Hope Baptist Church at the end of the nearly four-hour service Saturday and her silver-and-gold casket was lifted in the air, the weight of the moment was too much for her mother to bear.

Gospel singer Cissy Houston wailed, "My baby! My baby!" as she was held up by two women and led out of the church behind her daughter's body.

A few steps behind her was the pop icon's daughter, Bobbi Kristina, also crying uncontrollably as she was comforted by Houston's close friend, singer Ray J.

It was the most searing scene on a day with mixed moods as family, friends and a list of celebrities ? sometimes one and the same ? came to the humble New Hope Baptist Church, where Whitney Houston first wowed a congregation, to remember one of music's legends, but also a New Jersey hometown girl.

Houston died the previous Saturday in Beverly Hills, Calif., on the eve of the Grammys at the age of 48.

She is to be buried Sunday next to her father, John Houston, in nearby Westfield, N.J.

Her death marked the end of a life of stunning achievement. Blessed with a voice of great power and beauty, Houston became one of pop music's most successful artists over a career that spanned nearly three decades and segued into film with hits like "The Bodyguard."

But her life was not without struggles. An addiction to drugs and a tumultuous union with ex-husband Bobby Brown saw her tumbling from grace.

Both sides of Houston were recalled at the service at New Hope, which was filled with about 300 mourners, including Oprah Winfrey, Tyler Perry, Alicia Keys, Mariah Carey, Mary J. Blige, Forest Whitaker, Jennifer Hudson, Diane Sawyer and Houston's cousin, Dionne Warwick.

"She was someone with a charmed and a beautiful life, sometimes misunderstood, even by herself," said her sister-in-law and manager, Patricia Houston. "But a life nevertheless that gave joy, happiness, enthusiasm, peace and beautiful music to millions of people around the world."

Kevin Costner, her co-star in "The Bodyguard," said that for all of Houston's beauty and success, she was still yearning for approval from the public and somewhat insecure, a superstar who "still wondered, 'Am I good enough? Am I pretty enough? Will they like me?'"

"It's a tree we could all hang from ? the unexplainable burden that comes with fame," he said. "Call it doubt. Call it fear. I've had mine. And I know the famous in the room have had theirs."

Many who spoke talked about Houston's unshakable faith in Jesus Christ. They said it got her through some of her most difficult times. Perry recalled a conversation where Houston would look sad when reflecting on her troubles, but then would hasten to add that God was taking care of her.

"The other thing I know for sure ? and this is more important than anything that she's done in her life ? Whitney Houston loved the Lord," he said.

Fittingly, music played a major role in the send-off to one of music's greatest voices.

Stevie Wonder rewrote lyrics to "Ribbon in the Sky" for Houston ? "you will always be a ribbon in the sky," he sang.

So did gospel's the Rev. Kim Burrell for "A Change is Gonna Come," which Warwick said was Houston's favorite song of all time. R. Kelly brought the New Hope Baptist Church to its feet with a stirring version of "I Look to You," the title of Houston's final studio album.

And Keys, her voice breaking at times, dedicated her song "Send Me An Angel" to Houston

Brown briefly appeared at the funeral, walking to the casket, touching it and walking out. He later said in a statement that he and his children were asked repeatedly to move and he left rather than risk creating a scene.

Close family friend Aretha Franklin, whom Houston lovingly called "Aunt Ree," had been expected to sing at the service, but said early Saturday she was too ill to attend. Franklin said in an email to The Associated Press that she had been up most of the night with leg spasms and sent best wishes to the family.

Saturday night, Franklin performed at Radio City Music Hall and remembered Houston with a light gospel rendition of "I Will Always Love You."

Warwick presided over the funeral, introducing speakers and singers and offering short insights about her cousin; she joked that Houston's Super Bowl performance of "The Star Spangled Banner" became almost as big as the telephone book.

Hudson, who sang "I Will Always Love You" in a Grammy tribute the night after Houston's death, mourned Houston along with Monica, Brandy, and Jordin Sparks ? representing a generation of big-voiced young singers who grew up emulating the star of the '80s and '90s. Sparks stars with Houston in the remake of the 1970s film "Sparkle," due out in August.

As the funeral began, mourners fell quiet as three police officers escorted Houston's casket, draped with white roses and purple lilies. White-robed choir members began to fill the pews on the podium. As the band played softly, the choir sang in a hushed voice, "Whitney, Whitney, Whitney."

A program featuring a picture of Houston looking skyward read "Celebrating the life of Whitney Elizabeth Houston, a child of God." Pictures of Houston as a baby, with her mother and daughter filled the program.

"I never told you that when you were born, the Holy Spirit told me that you would not be with me long," Cissy Houston wrote her daughter in a letter published in the program. "And I thank God for the beautiful flower he allowed me to raise and cherish for 48 years."

"Rest, my baby girl in peace," the letter ends. It is signed "Mommie."

Over her career, Houston sold more than 50 million records in the United States alone. Her voice, an ideal blend of power, grace and beauty, made classics out of songs like "Saving All My Love For You," ''I Will Always Love You," ''The Greatest Love of All" and "I'm Every Woman." Her six Grammys were only a fraction of her many awards.

Houston had her first No. 1 hit by the time she was 22, followed by a flurry of No. 1 songs and multi-platinum records. Her last album, "I Look To You," debuted on the top of the charts when it was released in 2009 with strong sales, but didn't have the staying power of her previous records. A tour the next year was doomed by cancellations because of illness and sub-par performances.

On Saturday, fans were kept blocks from the church and the invitation-only funeral, but their presence was felt. A huge shrine of heart-shaped balloons and personal messages covered the street corner around the church entrance.

A few fans gathered hours before the service as close as they could get to the church, some from as far away as Washington, D.C., and Miami. Bobby Brooks said he came from Washington "just to be among the rest of the fans."

"Just to celebrate her life, not just her death," he said. "Just to sing and dance with the people that love her."

Grammys Performances: A History Of Awkward Hook-Ups

Lil Wayne and Deadmau5, Maroon 5 and Beach Boys among odd pairings at this year's Grammy Awards.
By Gil Kaufman

When it comes to booking talent, the producers behind the Grammy Awards can't resist packing the roster full of as much A-list eye candy as possible. And sometimes that means doubling, tripling or quadrupling up on acts in order to ensure the show doesn't stretch into Monday morning.

The lineup for Sunday night's 54th annual affair is no different, with a sometimes-confounding collection of contemporary and classic artists smooshed together in ways that will only make sense once the show commences. And even then ...

The most recent addition is the recently reformed original lineup of surf daddies, the Beach Boys, who will blow the dust off with a helping hand from Foster the People and Maroon 5.

Certainly no one is going to gum up Adele's big live-performance comeback by packing the stage with other distracting artists, but only the good lord above knows what it will look like when Chris Brown, Lil Wayne, David Guetta, the Foo Fighters and Deadmau5 summon their Wonder Twin powers for the show's first-ever salute to dance music.

The year's obligatory tribute will honor the recently deceased Etta James, and it will pair R&B diva Alicia Keys with blues soul veteran Bonnie Raitt and some more players to be announced later.

It wasn't specified at press time, but the most recent release from the Recording Academy also noted that jazz pianist/singer Diana Krall, Eagles guitarist Joe Walsh, funk saxophone life Maceo Parker and Americana duo the Civil Wars had been added as well.

This year's roster bodes well when it comes to WTF moments, but there are plenty more highlights from the ghost of Grammys past:

2011: In a tribute to then-ailing soul icon Aretha Franklin, we saw the sometimes jarring combination of indie darling Florence Welch sharing the stage with country singer Martina McBride, R&B belters Jennifer Hudson and Christina Aguilera, and gospel great Yolanda Adams.

And who could forget the sight of Bob Dylan fronting a board-groaning collaborative that also included Mumford & Sons and the Avett Brothers?

Slightly less odd, but still pretty trippy, was the hookup between actress/ part-time movie singer Gwyneth Paltrow, Cee Lo Green and the Henson Company Muppets for a version of Green's ubiquitous "Forget You."

2010: Pairing kind of made sense on paper, but whoever dreamed up the odd combo of Jamie Foxx, T-Pain, hip-hop legend Doug E. Fresh and guitar hero Slash for a version of Foxx's "Blame It" should have maybe let that soup cook a bit longer.

2009: We're not saying that the Jonas Brothers didn't hold their own on the stage with Stevie Wonder, but let's just say that the sooner "Burnin' Up" ended and "Superstition" began, the better. 2006: Speaking of good on paper, whatever the conversation was that convinced Madonna to share the stage with cartoon hip-pop group Gorillaz must have been pretty brave.

That year also featured two of the all-time head-scratching Grammy groupings. A tribute to funk pioneer Sly Stone packed the stage with a disparate group that included Joss Stone, John Legend, Fantasia, Maroon 5, Ciara, will.i.am, Aerosmith's Steven Tyler and Joe Perry, Robert Randolph, and lesser-known singers Van Hunt and Devin Lima. Perhaps strangest of all, though, was when the reclusive Stone came out sporting a towering Mohawk and mumbled a few lyrics before walking offstage.

And if you had ever told anyone that one day Paul McCartney would share the stage with Linkin Park and Jay-Z for a mash-up of the Beatles' "Yesterday" and the Jay/Park number "Numb/Encore," well, let's just say they might not believe you.

Chaos! Profanity! Wardrobe malfunctions! Don't miss Sway and James Montgomery live from the Grammys red carpet this Sunday, February 12, for a full three hours of mayhem, starting at 5 p.m. ET on MTV.com. And the fun doesn't end Sunday: MTV News has you covered until the Grammy hangover wears off!

Review of microsatellite instability (MSI) in colorectal cancer - The ...

Clinical Cancer Review just published an "OnlineFirst" article on February 2, 2012 (link to abstract) that reviews microsatellite instability (MSI) in colorectal cancer.? There have been several recent reviews on this topic in various journals, including Archives of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine in October 2011.? The review by Drs Geiersbach and Samowitz in Archives is excellent (and recommended too) but has a decidedly technical, lab-oriented focus. I recommend this one to pathologists looking for a more clinically-oriented review that especially addresses current and future studies looking at how the molecular heterogeneity of "MSI" tumors may have different chemosensitivity responses.? It is very readable and certainly is the most current.? If you're looking for an article that makes you look good in tumor board, this is it!

A couple of highlights:

  • MSI as prognostic marker in CRC.? Observational studies, retrospective data from randomized clinical trials and meta-analyses have consistently shown that tumors that show MSI or deficient mismatch repair (MMR) are independently associated with improved survival and reduced recurrence rates compared with individuals with MSS tumors.
  • ECOG 5202 is a ongoing trial of stage II CRC patients stratifying them into low-risk versus high-risk based on MSI and allelic loss of 18q.? Low-risk patients (MSI and intact 18q) are assigned to an observational arm post-op while high-risk patients (MSS and allelic loss of 18q) are assigned to standard post-op chemo for stage III patients (FOLFOX).? Unfortunately, this study will not address the use of MSI as a predictive marker for response to 5-FU therapy.
  • MSI as predictive marker in CRC.? Mutliple studies, including RCTs, retrospective case series, in vitro cell line data, and a meta-analysis, have consistently shown that MSI is a negative predictive marker for response to 5-FU.? It has been recently recommended that patients with stage II colon cancer showing MSI not receive 5-FU as adjuvant therapy given their favorable prognosis and lack of benefit from 5-FU.? Incidentally, in discussing whether to routinely test for MSI in stage II and II patients with the oncologists, it was evident that there is a lot of "catch-up" and education that needs to be done here.?
  • Currently, there are only limited data in MSI tumors from patients treated with oxaliplatin combined with 5-FU and predictive information is lacking.? This is an important confounding problem interpreting the literature since standard first-line treatment for CRC is 5-FU and oxaliplatin.? It appears, however, from in vitro studies that oxaliplatin sensitivity is independent of the MMR system.
  • Since KRAS testing is becoming more routine for CRC, especially in high stage III/stage IV cancers, it is important also to note that sporadic MSI CRCs (with epigenetic inactivation of hMLH1) show frequent (~50%) co-occurrence of BRAFV600E mutations (compared to an overall BRAF mutation frequency of about 10% among all CRCs).? Note: The presence of a BRAF mutation indicates a sporadic MSI CRC and essentially excludes a diagnosis of Lynch syndrome.
  • There's a lot of interesting stuff on possible additional targets for therapy you should check out.

The Fear of Public Speaking

Published by Robertson | February 8, 2012 | | 2

Do you have a fear of public speaking?? You have the ability? to talk perfectly in front of your friends and peers when the numbers are low, but when in a meeting type situation when everything?s serious and you have every pair of eyes in the room locked on you, not one single word comes out of your mouth? Well it only takes three days to master this feat once and for all with Public Speaking Secrets!

When you know you have to stand in front of the crowd and speak, this is when the anxiety of your fear of public speaking kicks in. It feels as if your stomach tightens, you start taking shorter, much quicker breaths, and act as if that group of 30 your about to speak in front of turned into 1000 people who are holding tomatoes ready to throw at any minute. But really, you have to understand one thing. You are just like them. You wouldn?t throw a tomato at someone who YOU came to see.

You wouldn?t embarrass the person who YOU paid money to see or even just devoted time out of the day to see. Because than the crowd would be stupid for even just wanting to listen to you. The crowd is there with open ears ? they?re willing to listen.

Trying to be perfect on the stage is like trying to be god. It just won?t happen no matter what you try. You have to be yourself when speaking in front of crowds or you?ll never be able to overcome your fear of public speaking. Crowds that listen to public speakers generally come to see and listen to the public speaker, not listen to someone?s impersonation. How would you feel if you watched a comedian and all he did was imitate other comedians? You?d feel ripped off correct? Learning to be yourself is a strong key to get rid of your fear of public speaking.

Another way to rid of your fear of public speaking is to not try to remember the whole speech. When trying to remember the whole speech word for word in the same order, you are bound to mess up, especially when nervous. The key to destroying your fear of public speaking here is to remember only the 2 or 3 biggest points of the speech, and then you will be able to speak with a much better flow to your audience without having to worry about saying line after line to perfection. Public Speaking Secrets unveils all the keys to getting rid of your fear of public speaking within three days or less! This was just a taste!

Obama refuses to pick sides in Super Bowl (AP)

WASHINGTON ? President Barack Obama isn't picking sides this Super Bowl Sunday.

In an interview with NBC's Matt Lauer before the championship game, Obama would only say he expects a "great game."

"You're not to get me (to pick), I'm going to look for a great game," Obama said with a coy smile.

In a pre-Super Bowl interview just a few days into his presidency in 2009, Obama correctly predicted a Pittsburgh Steelers win over the Arizona Cardinals.

But, facing re-election, Obama said he wasn't picking sides this time.

Earlier in the day, Obama said on Twitter that he was looking forward to game but wished his hometown team, the Chicago Bears, "weren't watching it from home, too."

Successful Real Estate Buying Tips | yesillertarim.org

Real Estate

austin realestate

If you are in the austin realestate market, there are some things you should take into consideration. First, you should never over analyze a price. If you find some properties you like, feel free to make an offer even if it is considerably lower than the asking price. Failing to make an offer only ensures no chance at buying the home. Next, place the home under contract. Be sure to place a safety clause into the contract that basically says you will buy the home providing there are no serious safety issues that need to be addressed. Once this is complete, have the property inspected. Make a list of all the things that need to be fixed and try to get the seller to complete as many repairs as possible. While you are in the neighborhood, drive around and take a look at the conditions of the other houses as well as the cars that are sitting on the street. Also, take a look at the condition of the sidewalks and streets. If there is litter and junk everywhere, you are likely not in the greatest neighborhood and may want to look for a home elsewhere.

My family tree is full of ? no, not nuts, that's a stupid saying ...

So, remember Rough on Rats? OF COURSE YOU DO. If you don?t, here. Read the saga. There you go, don?t you feel totally enlightened on all things arsenic-poisoning-related? (Crap, now that I?m talking about this again, the FBI is adding more and MORE pages to my file, aren?t they? Dammit. Well, I guess someone?s got to keep the FBI in business and today it?s me.)

So if you remember, my mother dropped the bomb that I had a relative who was poisoned by arsenic and that I?d never been told about when I told her about my very intensive research into Rough on Rats.

This is not surprising. I have long suspected my family is in some sort of witness-protection program. BOTH SIDES of my family. Because not only do they not talk about our history or our ancestors, they have NO INTEREST in it. NONE. Who doesn?t have any interest in where they came from or even what nationality they are? I remember coming home once when I was a kid and asking my mom what nationality we were and her saying, ?American,? and me saying, ?Yes, I KNOW American, but BEFORE that, we aren?t Native American, so we must have come from SOMEWHERE? and her saying, ?I don?t know, maybe Canada?? WHAT THE HELL. Who doesn?t know, and doesn?t care, what nationality you are at all?

This is why I am totally obsessed with that show Who Do You Think You Are. I want to be famous enough to be on Who Do You Think You Are. This is one of my dreams. I don?t want to be famous enough to have all the money or a hot actor husband or twenty adopted children from Zimbabwe or a gold-plated bidet; I want to be famous enough to be on a low-rated NBC show where someone does research into your family and finds out you were related to royalty, or you came over on the Mayflower, or your ancestors were dentists, or something. THIS IS MY DREAM. Shut up, I don?t judge YOUR dreams.

I attempted to do some genealogical research years ago but I didn?t get very far because I am poor and I think to really get very far you need to have money for spreadsheets and websites and research and travel and also you need a lot of free time, and I don?t have any of those things.

I have found out, however, the following things, from random conversations with and observations of family members:

Both sides of my family were originally from Canada (this is not surprising, considering we all have French last names)

We have some ancestry from Ireland, going way back (I can TOTALLY officially celebrate St. Patrick?s Day now, I mean, I WON?T, I think it?s just an excuse to get totally drunk on cheap green beer, but I COULD)

Even though my dad attempts to hide it, his mother?s side of the family were all staunch Democrats, going way back, and all his years of telling me he had no idea where I came from or what?s wrong with me was a total ruse, it?s HEREDITARY, Dad (and also? His cousin J. MET BILL CLINTON and has a PHOTO OF HIM SHAKING HIS HAND and this is SO EXCITING TO ME but when I bring that up to my father he just shakes his head and mutters grumblingly under his breath, something about ?damn liberals?)

Both of my grandfathers were in the military; one actually fought in World War II and I?ve seen photos of him in Japan, and the other was something top-secret and I didn?t even know about it until I went home recently and saw a military thingamabobber on his grave and asked about it and my mom said ?we don?t talk about that? and THAT IS MYSTERIOUS so probably he was a spy

And that?s about it. I KNOW. That?s like nothing! So I think it will be no surprise to anyone that, from an early age, I started randomly making up stories about my ancestors. Because if no one was going to tell me anything, dammit, I was going to make shit up. This has carried over into today. I was having this conversation with @lgalaviz this weekend. There is nothing more boring than telling a story the way it actually happened, in my opinion. Embellishing the story for effect makes it so much better and makes people want to listen to your story more, right? I mean, think of the best storytellers you know. Do they say, ?I went to the store today and bought eggs and milk? or do they say ?I went to the store today and some douchecanoe cut me off in the parking lot while they were talking on their cell phone, and then when I was in the store I?m pretty sure the guy at the deli counter was hitting on me, or maybe he had something in his eye, IT IS HARD TO TELL WITH THESE THINGS, then I bought some eggs and milk and the checkout guy was all, ?You didn?t buy chocolate this time? which makes me think that probably I?m buying chocolate way too often if they remember me for my totally over-the-top chocolate-buying-binges, then when I was in the parking lot I thought about egging the car of the cutter-offer person, since I totally had the eggs in my bag and all, but I restrained, because I wanted to make an omelet when I got home and didn?t want to waste all those good eggs.? WHICH STORY IS BETTER. The second one, right? Right. I mean, unless you?re on your way to something and time?s an issue, in which case, you might want the first one just because you?re in a hurry. ANYWAY. So I learned from a very young age to make up stories, because I didn?t have any info so why the hell NOT make up stories, and also that made them a lot more interesting.

Oh, on a related note, so not really SIDE NOTE, here is an example.

So my parents met and got married and shit, whatever, as people do. Over the years, bits and pieces of that story came out because, like I mentioned, it?s like state secrets around the Amy household. And I kind of stitched them together into a story of my own about how they got together. This was my story of how my parents met and got married.

My mom was dating to a guy and the guy was drafted and went off to Vietnam. He said, ?will you wait for me?? and she said, ?Yes, I will.? While he was over there, my dad came back from the military. My mom was in a bar and my dad was there and got in a big bar fight and she fixed his bleeding face and he was totally charming and she was pretty and so they fell in love. When the military guy came back, he heard my mom and dad were engaged so he came after my dad and found him in a bar and was all, ?you stole my lady!? and he and my dad got in a huge fight and my dad totally won. And now that guy is weird and short and chubby and a doctor.

When I told my mother this story one day, she laughed until she cried. When she finally stopped laughing enough for me to ask WHY she was laughing, she said, ?Um?you know none of that happened, right?? and I said, ?What? No, I?m pretty sure it did,? and she said, ?Well, I was there, and you weren?t, SINCE YOU WEREN?T BORN,? and she said what really happened was she was dating short doctor guy, and he was drafted, but they weren?t even serious, and she did meet my dad at a bar, but there was never any brawling at all, and when short doctor came back, he did accidentally see my mom and dad out one night and jokingly say to my dad ?you stole my lady? or something similar but he wasn?t even serious because he and my mom weren?t even an item. Oh, and yes, he is short and chubby and a doctor now. And, TRUE FACT!, my dad scowls whenever he sees him because he used to date my mom. That makes me laugh, my parents have been married for like forty years.?(Also, before I found out about the bar, my mom used to tell us they met at a church picnic. When the bar story came out, I said, ?What? What about the picnic?? and she said, ?I didn?t want you to think when you were little that your father and I were lushes.? Hee!)

THAT STORY SUCKS A BAG OF DICKS.

MY STORY IS SO MUCH BETTER. My story has INTRIGUE and FIGHTING and BLEEDING and ROMANCE and POSSIBLE ALCOHOLISM. The real story has BORING PEOPLE meeting at BORING BARS and BORINGLY DATING.

(Oh, also, and unrelated, once my mom dated someone named ?Bouncy McGee.? His real first name wasn?t ?Bouncy? ? and his last name wasn?t McGee but I don?t want to put his real name here, that?s so mean ? but apparently he bounced when he walked and it made his hair pop up and down so that was his nickname. MOM. What kind of people were you dating before you met Dad? Short dudes and people with walking issues? That is sad.)

And before you say, ?But that?s LYING!? it?s not, not really. It?s EMBELLISHING. For EFFECT. No one is HURT in the telling of a better story. I?d argue that people are HELPED, actually. Helped because they are entertained! They leave nourished! They leave with the satisfied, full-belly feeling of a good, fun story, told well, with many details to make it seem more real!

ANYWAY. This isn?t what I?m here to talk about today at all.

So my mom promised to investigate the ancestor who was murdered by Rough on Rats for me the next time she talked to my grandmother. I?m not going home again probably until the summer, so I wouldn?t be able to talk to her about it. I mean, I guess I could call her. But I hate the phone. I?m totally the worst on the phone. And my grandmother is yelly on the phone and doesn?t often hear you when you are asking her things.

So she went to visit my grandmother and told me she couldn?t send me a PDF of the newspaper article about the relative who was a Rough on Rats murderer because it was super-glued into an album my grandmother had so it wasn?t removable for scanning and PDFing. Dammit. I said, ?Mom, did you read it?? and she said she SKIMMED IT. Why doesn?t anyone in my family care that we totally have a murderess in our family? I asked, ?did it mention Rough on Rats?? and she actually said, ?I don?t REMEMBER.? GET WITH THE PROGRAM MOM.

She did remember the name of the murderess, however, and with the help of @cmtomaso, who is the hero of the hour, I was pointed in the direction of this website. All the newspapers of upstate New York! PDFed! Going back to the 1800s! SO EXCITING! Well, except the Malone Evening Telegram, which is the suckiest newspaper in the history of print journalism. They don?t even have a website. WHAT NEWSPAPER IN 2012 DOESN?T HAVE A WEBSITE. Seriously, Malone Evening Telegram, you call me and hire me and I will get you into the 21st century for only about $40,000 a year salary and full benefits. CALL ME.

And LOOKIE LOOKIE!!!?

If you can?t read this, I think you can click to enlarge? I don?t know how the world works, maybe not.

Unfortunately, as you can see, the newspapers in the 40s in upstate New York weren?t into tabloid-style journalism, because if I?d been a reporter back then, I?d totally have written something more than these two very factual pieces. There would have been a lot more ?THE BLACK WIDOW? and shit, if I?d written them, I can tell you right now.

Things that bear note:

I like how it says that most crimes in Franklin County are ?run-of-the-mill.? Probably not to the people that are being criminalized, Fort Covington Sun.

My mother told me she thought my murderess great-great-aunt killed both my great-granduncle and then her next husband, but this article seems to imply that she killed my great-granduncle, her own son, and then attempted to poison her employer, which is when she got caught. I couldn?t find any followup articles on whether or not my great-granduncle and third cousin (is that right? he?d have been my grandmother?s first cousin, so my mom?s second cousin, and my third cousin? or am I totally off?) were found with arsenic in their systems or not. The Fort Covington Sun really wasn?t the best with reporting, I think.

So her story is that she was driven to it because her employer mistreated her. I need more info, Fort Covington Sun. What work did she do for him, exactly? Housework? Farm work? Something more?naughty? Worrisome.

SEVEN CHILDREN. Good gravy.

She was 11 years younger than my great-granduncle and then ten years older than her second husband. I?m thinking pickins were slim back then in my hometown. Oh, wait, they still are now. Nothing?s changed in that department.

SEVEN CHILDREN. Gulp. She had her first one when she was 19. So she married my great-granduncle when she was, say, 18? And he was 29. That seems like probably it was ill-advised.

The judge?s name was ?Cornelius J. Carey.? Hee! That is a VERY OFFICIOUS NAME.

My two little third cousins were county charges! I wonder whatever happened to them!

Then she was sent to the mental institution for being a looney poisoner. Sigh. ?Female mental defectives.? Maybe she was just tired. SEVEN CHILDREN SERIOUSLY.

Also, Rough on Rats was never mentioned. SIGH.

So since there is a LOT of info missing, I am OBVIOUSLY forced to make up a story about her, in which she is a beleaguered, exhausted wife, with an old husband (sorry, Great Grand-Uncle John) and SEVEN DAMN CHILDREN and something pushed her over the edge (I?m thinking something to do with the SEVEN CHILDREN) and then she did some murderin?. I don?t really have an excuse for her murdering her fifteen-year-old son, though. That one?s pretty heinous, I have to admit. Then we have the attempted murder of her employer, who seemed to be imprisoning her in his house (what the hell?) so probably that was justified. I feel like maybe this might be a the-night-the-lights-went-out-in-Georgia situation or something. THERE IS MORE TO THIS STORY.

I?ll get more information about this when I go home and talk to my grandmother. My grandmother?s stories are salty and full of cusses and my mom says she still calls my murderous great-great-aunt ?that bitch? so I?m totally looking forward to this.

Also, producers of Who Do You Think You Are, I know I?m not a famous person, but LOOK AT WHO?S IN MY FAMILY TREE. Would I NOT make the best hour of television ever? CALL ME RIGHT NOW. I would be SO EFFING ENTERTAINING. I mean, no one?s watching that show but me, anyway, what have you got to lose? NOTHING. It is my DREAM. Sigh.
