Program Launched to Give Shelters Supplies to Aid Rehabilitation ...

September?26,?2012

In an effort to help dogs saved from dogfighting operations and those helping on their road to recovery, The Humane Society of the United States is launching a national program to provide enrichment items for animal shelters and rescue groups to provide to the dogs.

The enrichment kits, including items such as toys, chew bones and collars, are collected through the online donation website GivingSomeThing.com and will be tailored to each organization?s needs. The packages for shelters will also include information and easy-to-implement strategies for all shelter dogs, as well as consultation with a certified pet dog trainer.

?In the many dogfighting cases The Humane Society of the United States works on each year, we see firsthand the results of providing necessary enrichment to the dogs rescued from these operations,? said Chris Schindler, manager of animal fighting investigations for The HSUS. ?With the right tools and some patience, these dogs can develop into well-adjusted pets who move on to loving homes.?

In addition to investigating animal fighting operations nationwide and assisting local law enforcement agencies with rescues, The HSUS is dedicated to helping the dogs adjust to life off their chains. The HSUS? Dogfighting Rescue Coalition is a national network of animal shelters and rescue groups dedicated to giving every dog rescued from dogfighting operations a chance at a new life. After a dogfighting bust, coalition members take in the abused canine victims, work with them, and ultimately place them into loving homes.

Members of the public can purchase items for the kits that will be distributed to shelters that are currently housing dogs from dogfighting cases here: http://givingsomething.com/The-Humane-Society-of-the-United-States
