Contrary to our belief, adults are not the only ones who have mood swings; children too can experience mood disorders. The most common mood disorder among children is depression, although their expression and feeling may not necessarily be similar as that of adults.

A child having mood swings may not be able to tell it in a normal way, instead he may complain of stomachache, body ache, or a headache unrelated to any significant pathological cause. Often mood disorder remains undiagnosed as the symptoms mimic normal emotional behavior. Keen observation and analysis is the key to recognize this disorder among children and teenagers, who else other than parent and caretakers can do so.

Decreased scholastic performance, ignoring to the advice of parents, crying easily without any substantial reason are the usual symptom of depression. Many times these children seem to be anxious and fearful. Most mood disorders are due to imbalance of chemicals in the brain that are triggered by environmental factors. Fortunately, mood swings in children is treatable. Realizing it early may prevent long term health issues.

Causes Of Mood Disorders In Children

The exact reason for mood disorder in children is difficult to know, but there are several things that can contribute it.

It can be triggered by a sad incident in a child?s life such as death of father or mother.

A child observing constant conflicts between parents may feel depressed and dejected. Neglecting children by the parents or child abuse is also a major cause for mood disorders in children.

Many form of serious mood disorders in children run in family. It has something to do with an abnormality in the brain chemical which is responsible for regulating a child?s mood.

Extreme stress or traumatic event for which the child is not prepared at this tender age may consequently affect his body. Its repercussions can permanently affect his mind and body. He may pass into the phase of anxiety and depression for the rest of his life.

It has been found that at least 3 percent of children between the age of 5 and 17 pass through the depressive phase. The incidence increases as the child grows. During early childhood and preteen years the ratio between boys and girls remains the same. But the incidence of depression in girls is found to be more than boys who are in their teens. This may have hormonal influence.

Mood Disorder Symptoms In Children

A brief feeling of grief and depression after a traumatic event such as that of death of the loved one, or loss of a pet is normal and does not account for mood disorder. Children eventually find their own coping mechanism given time, support and love from the family members, friends and teachers. However, if the symptoms extend for a long period and interfere with their daily activity and school performance it?s a cause of concern. Here are some of the symptoms that may help you to recognize such mood disorder.

• Child frequently complains of physical problems such as stomachache, headache, without any obvious medical reason.
• Appearing somber all the time.
• Crying all the time without any real cause.
• Injuring self.
• Loss of appetite.
• Difficulty in concentration.
• Poor scholastic performance as compared to the past.
• Feeling of hopelessness.
• Aggressiveness and hostile attitude.
• Feeling guilty all the time.
• Loss of interest from little pleasures which most other children enjoy.
• Fatigue.
• Loss of interest from the surrounding and from daily activities.
• Feeling of hate.

Dealing With Mood Disorders In Children

It is important to keep stress and tension in a child within the limits of his tolerance. Physical and psychologically frightening factors should be kept to the minimum. Parents should ensure that the child feels emotionally secured all the time.

There are two approaches for treating a child having mood disorder. It may consist of behavioral therapy or drug therapy or both together. Usually, child counseling and cognitive behavioral therapy is the first line of treatment. It is aimed in changing the way of thinking and acting in a child which is responsible for mood changes. In most cases it is successful.

In severe cases of major depressive disorder, help of few anti-depressive drugs is taken by the physician. This drugs which belong to a group called selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors help to uplift the mood of the child by acting on the brain chemicals responsible for mood disorders.

Genes, depression and life satisfaction

ScienceDaily (Oct. 25, 2012) ? Vulnerability to major depression is linked with how satisfied we are with our lives. This association is largely due to genes, according to new research from Norway.

This is the main finding of a new twin study from the Norwegian Institute of Public Health in collaboration with the University of Oslo. The researchers compared longitudinal information from identical and fraternal twins to determine how vulnerability to major depression is associated with dispositional (overall) lifetime satisfaction.

Previous studies have systematically shown that life satisfaction is considerably stable over time. People who are satisfied at any one point in life are often also satisfied at other times in their lives. This stability -- the dispositional life satisfaction -- is often said to reflect an underlying positive mood or a positive disposition. Previous studies have also shown that people with such a positive disposition are less depressed, but very few studies have examined the mechanisms behind this relationship.

Results:

• Both men and women who met the criteria for lifetime major depression (15.8% and 11.1% respectively) reported lower life satisfaction.
• 74% of the relationship between major depression and life satisfaction could be explained by genes.
• The remaining association (26%) could be explained by unique environmental factors.
• The researchers also calculated the heritability of dispositional life satisfaction and major depression separately. The heritability of dispositional life satisfaction, which has not previously been reported, was estimated to be 72%. In other words, it is largely genes that explain why we differ in our tendency to be satisfied and content with our lives.
• Major depression had a heritability of 34%, which is highly consistent with previous studies.

"The stable tendency to see the bright side of life is associated with lower risk of major depression because some genetic factors influence both conditions," says researcher Ragnhild Bang Nes from the Division of Mental Health. Genes involved in satisfaction and positivity thus give protection against major depression. Nes is the main author of the study that was recently published in the Journal of Affective Disorders.

Susceptibility to both depression and overall life satisfaction is partly influenced by the same set of genes, but is also influenced by genes that are unique to each.

"The heritability figures mean that 72% of the individual differences in overall satisfaction, and 34% of the differences in depression, are caused by genes. These figures do not provide information on the importance of specific genes for an individual's life satisfaction or risk of major depression. Traits and propensities like dispositional life satisfaction and vulnerability to major depression are not heritable in themselves. Heritability refers to the importance of genes for explaining the differences between people and the estimates may vary across time and place," explains Nes.

Although the heritability of major depression was lower than that of life satisfaction, this does not necessarily mean that life satisfaction is far more heritable than depression. The researchers used questionnaire data from two time points to measure dispositional life satisfaction, and a single clinical interview to measure the prevalence of lifetime major depression. The use of only a single assessment to measure depression may partly explain why the heritability of depression is so much lower than life satisfaction.

Can we prevent depression by promoting life satisfaction?

"We found that depression and life satisfaction did not share as many environmental factors as genetic factors. This means that environmental factors of importance to life satisfaction (for example, activities and interventions that make you happy and content) only to a small extent protect against depression," says Nes.

"Although our underlying disposition to life satisfaction and positivity appears to be relatively stable, small actions in our daily lives may provide temporary pleasures, and these are also important. How we spend our time is tremendously important for our happiness and well-being. It is therefore important to encourage and follow up on activities that make us happy."

Nes adds: "To some extent, positive experiences may also accumulate over time and create favorable conditions for our quality of life."

About the study

The analyses were based on approximately 1500 twin pairs (both identical and fraternal) from the NIPH twin panel. Identical twins share 100% of the genetic material, while fraternal on average share 50% of their genes -- meaning that they are genetically like other siblings and first-degree relatives. By comparing how similar identical and fraternal co-twin are in life satisfaction and risk of major depression, scientists can determine the extent to which variation and covariation is due to genes and environmental influences. The resulting figures reflect the importance of genetic and environmental influences on differences between individuals and do not provide information about the exact relationship between depression and life satisfaction in individuals. At the individual level genetic and environmental factors are dependent on one another in a complex interaction.

A Prayer About Fatherhood Answered Through the Veil of a - Patheos

Once upon a time, I wrote a letter to St. Joseph. His feast day rolled around, and I was writing him because as a father, I was feeling a bit like Sisyphus. You know, the king the gods punished by being forced to roll an immense boulder up a hill, only to watch it roll back down, and to repeat this action forever.

Being a father is like that sometimes, isn?t it? In my note to St. Joseph I made an observation,

As fatherhood goes, the method that many love about you, you know, the leading by example thing? That?s overrated, and pretty ineffective, at least as I?ve come to see. I find that I?m always explaining things to my children, and telling them to do things they don?t want to do, all the time. I?m not sure if that was your experience with your own natural children (?) or with your step-child Jesus.

If it was, I wish you?d say something to us dads out here. Did Jesus ever put you through the wringer?

I finished that post up with a plaintive sounding prayer request.

One last thing. When you have a moment, pray for me, will you? I?d be much obliged.

Did you know that sometimes your prayers are answered through a homework assignment? It?s true and I have the proof for you below.

It?s a brief little essay my youngest son (eleven years old) wrote for school. See, I got home from work yesterday and my wife gave me the heads up that the laptop was upstairs and in use. Something about an essay due tomorrow, why didn?t he work on it over the Fall Break (?), etc.

I just grabbed a beer and and a book and chilled out. A half hour later, I was asked to proofread this. I got a lump in my throat and a tear in my eye as a result.

My American hero

? ? ?My American hero is my dad. He used to a be a Marine, and he was on embassy duty and in an artillery battalion. He traveled all over the world, he?s gone to places like Egypt and Japan. He is very strong because he did a lot of physical activity in the Marines. He became a Staff Sergeant and was a very strong leader. But later, when I was still young, he got in a car crash with a few other Marines. When the crash happened, he was asleep, and he broke a lot of bones. But he eventually recovered after a few months in the hospital.

After that he left the Marines and worked at Exel Logistics, and he became one of the managers there. But, when my dad retired from the Marines, we moved to Tennessee from California. We found a home in xxxx, a town in the city of Knoxville, in East Tennessee. He didn?t find a job for two years. But then he found a job in the Archives in downtown Knoxville. He has had that job from then till now. So he is the one who earns the money for our family.

He teaches us about God and the Catholic Church. And he takes us to church every Sunday. He gets us involved with church activities. When we do something wrong, he corrects us and helps us with what we are doing. He cares about our grades and helps us with our homework. He likes when we join programs and supports us at our school activities, like attending my first 6th Grade Band concert to cheer me on. He teaches us about life skills. He loves cars and racing. He buys us things that we need.

He is very funny. He tries to make us happy. He buys us pets. He gives us money for good grades on our report cards. He makes special occasions, like birthdays, really good by taking us out to eat. He is dedicated to his job, he loves his family, he is a hardcore Catholic, and he is an awesome parent. That is why my father is my American hero.

I guess being there, and being an example, counts for something after all. Pardon me if I mark this down as another minor miracle at Casa del Weathers.

Thanks for praying for me, St. Joseph. Please keep it up (Lord knows, I need your prayers!).

Italy quake scientists convicted

The BBC's Alan Johnston in Rome says the prosecution argued that the scientists were "just too reassuring"

Six Italian scientists and an ex-government official have been sentenced to six years in prison over the 2009 deadly earthquake in L'Aquila.

A regional court found them guilty of multiple manslaughter.

Prosecutors said the defendants gave a falsely reassuring statement before the quake, while the defence maintained there was no way to predict major quakes.

The 6.3 magnitude quake devastated the city and killed 309 people.

Many smaller tremors had rattled the area in the months before the quake that destroyed much of the historic centre.

It took Judge Marco Billi slightly more than four hours to reach the verdict in the trial, which had begun in September 2011.

Lawyers have said that they will appeal against the sentence. As convictions are not definitive until after at least one level of appeal in Italy, it is unlikely any of the defendants will immediately face prison.

'Alarming' case

The seven - all members of the National Commission for the Forecast and Prevention of Major Risks - were accused of having provided "inaccurate, incomplete and contradictory" information about the danger of the tremors felt ahead of 6 April 2009 quake, Italian media report.

The Apennines, the belt of mountains that runs down through the centre of Italy, is riddled with faults, and the "Eagle" city of L'Aquila has been hammered time and time again by earthquakes. Its glorious old buildings have had to be patched up and re-built on numerous occasions.

Sadly, the issue is not "if" but "when" the next tremor will occur in L'Aquila. But it is simply not possible to be precise about the timing of future events. Science does not possess that power. The best it can do is talk in terms of risk and of probabilities, the likelihood that an event of a certain magnitude might occur at some point in the future.

The decision to prosecute some of Italy's leading geophysicists drew condemnation from around the world. The scholarly bodies said it had been beyond anyone to predict exactly what would happen in L'Aquila on 6 April 2009.

But the authorities who pursued the seven defendants stressed that the case was never about the power of prediction - it was about what was interpreted to be an inadequate characterisation of the risks; of being misleadingly reassuring about the dangers that faced their city.

Nonetheless, the verdicts will come as a shock to all researchers in Italy whose expertise lies in the field of assessing natural hazards. Their pronouncements will be scrutinised as never before, and their fear will be that they too could find themselves embroiled in legal action over statements that are inherently uncertain.

In addition to their sentences, all have been barred from ever holding public office again, La Repubblica reports.

In the closing statement, the prosecution quoted one of its witnesses, whose father died in the earthquake.

It described how Guido Fioravanti had called his mother at about 11:00 on the night of the earthquake - straight after the first tremor.

"I remember the fear in her voice. On other occasions they would have fled but that night, with my father, they repeated to themselves what the risk commission had said. And they stayed."

'Hasty sentence'

The judge also ordered the defendants to pay court costs and damages.

Reacting to the verdict against him, Bernardo De Bernardinis said: "I believe myself to be innocent before God and men."

"My life from tomorrow will change," the former vice-president of the Civil Protection Agency's technical department said, according to La Repubblica.

"But, if I am judged by all stages of the judicial process to be guilty, I will accept my responsibility."

Another, Enzo Boschi, described himself as "dejected" and "desperate" after the verdict was read.

"I thought I would have been acquitted. I still don't understand what I was convicted of."

One of the lawyers for the defence, Marcello Petrelli, described the sentences as "hasty" and "incomprehensible".

'Inherently unpredictable'

The case has alarmed many in the scientific community, who feel science itself has been put on trial.

Some scientists have warned that the case might set a damaging precedent, deterring experts from sharing their knowledge with the public for fear of being targeted in lawsuits, the BBC's Alan Johnston in Rome reports.

Among those convicted were some of Italy's most prominent and internationally respected seismologists and geological experts.

Earlier, more than 5,000 scientists signed an open letter to Italian President Giorgio Napolitano in support of the group in the dock.

After the verdict was announced, David Rothery, of the UK's Open University, said earthquakes were "inherently unpredictable".

"The best estimate at the time was that the low-level seismicity was not likely to herald a bigger quake, but there are no certainties in this game," he said.

Malcolm Sperrin, director of medical physics at the UK's Royal Berkshire Hospital said that the sentence was surprising and could set a worrying precedent.

"If the scientific community is to be penalised for making predictions that turn out to be incorrect, or for not accurately predicting an event that subsequently occurs, then scientific endeavour will be restricted to certainties only and the benefits that are associated with findings from medicine to physics will be stalled."

Held in line with the 2012 United Nationals theme of ?clean, safe and sustainable energy for all, the meeting began with the signing of the World Heads of the World Energy Day Proclamation establishing October 22 as a day to raise awareness about energy issues and stimulate political will to support sustainable energy.

With over 1.3 billion people yet to have access to electricity, this year?s theme is a call on world leaders to ensure equitable access to energy. In Africa, only a quarter of the population has access to electricity.

It is with an emphasis on the direct relationship between access to energy and socio-economic development that President Kagame began his address this morning. Along with attending Heads of States session, President Kagame called for the kind of global commitment that has made the Millenium Development Goals a success;

?It has become clear that when the world acknowledges that there is a problem and acts to resolve it, the outcome is impressive. We need to address imbalances of energy between developed and developing countries and raise level of consumption and utilization. The world community should treat access to energy as a basic right essential in the development process.?

President Kagame focused on practical solutions to address the energy shortage in Africa and Rwanda. His first proposal was the establishment of a globally accepted and respected consumption benchmark per capita;

?This would reduce waste, increase efficiency and cut costs enabling wide access to developing countries.?

Another practical solution was the need to establish a regulatory mechanism that can ?curb or eliminate wasteful unsustainable consumption.

A common point among all speakers was the need to increase investment in innovative infrastructure that have the potential of closing the gap in energy access. In this field, Africa has shown increased growth with a current 30% of $257 billion invested in the energy sector in Africa. However, as growing need on the ground show, the potential has yet to match the reality.

Joining all the leaders, President Kagame emphasized the need for investment to focus on technologies- particularly those easily available locally that can lead to a more efficient use of energy.

Held for the first time outside the United Nations, this year?s World Energy Forum brought together over two thousands delegates from across the world including heads of states, members of civil society and private sector. Over the next two days, the delegates are expected to share lessons and continue the conversation on the need practical measures and innovations to meet the energy challenge currently experienced worldwide. The discussions planned include a renewed debate on nuclear energy, sharing on technological innovations, energy as an investment opportunity and the effect of climate change on energy policies.

Map locates Brookfield, Wis., site of shooting near shopping mall

BROOKFIELD, Wis. (AP) ? Deputies searched Sunday for a shooter after multiple people were wounded when someone opened fire at a spa near a suburban Milwaukee shopping mall.

Brookfield police told WTMJ-AM the shooting happened about 11 a.m. Sunday at a spa across the street from the Brookfield Square Mall. The mall and a county club adjacent to the spa were locked down, local media reported.

Calls to police from The Associated Press rang to the Waukesha County Sheriff's Department. A woman who answered the phone there said deputies were looking for an active shooter but did not provide any other information.

Milwaukee FBI spokesman Leonard Peace said its SWAT team, hostage negotiators and others were helping with the response. But he declined to say how many FBI personnel were involved in all or provide details on what had happened.

Robert Schmidt, spokesman for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, said it had 10 agents participating.

Beth Strohbusch, a spokeswoman for Froedtert Memorial Hospital, said four shooting victims were taken there, and three more were expected. She said none of the four already received were in critical condition.

WISN-TV reported police were asking people in the mall's parking lot to clear out, because they had set up operations there.

Tactical teams were on the scene, along with at least 20 fire, ambulance and police vehicles. A medical helicopter was on the ground.

The shooting took place at Azana Day Spa, a two-story, 9,000-square-foot building across from the mall in a middle- to upper-class community west of Milwaukee.

It was the second mass shooting in Wisconsin this year. Wade Michael Page, a 40-year-old Army veteran and white supremacist, killed six people and injured three others before fatally shooting himself Aug. 5 at a Sikh temple south of Milwaukee.

The shooting at the mall took place less than a mile from where seven people were killed and four wounded on March 12, 2005, when a gunman opened fire at a Living Church of God service held at a hotel.

Two years passed by and Ines returned with their sophomore effort on WMMS / Music Is Intelligence.The main core of the band remained the same with Ines Fuchs writing all tracks except for ''Lonely Child'' written by Massimo Michieletto.''Eastern Dawning'' was recorded between April and November 95' at the Roxanne Studio in Leonberg by Davide Piai, eventually released in February 1996.

Again a very good collection of twelve melodic tracks is what Ines had to offer and they are all played with enthusiasm, containing nice melodic lines and beautiful vocal performances, offered through a clear production.Half about of them fall undoubtfully in the Neo Progressive Rock category along the lines of PENDRAGON, SHADOWLAND and LANDMARQ, extremely melodic, lyrical and easy-going music with a light symphonic twist, fronted by Ines Fuchs' floating synthesizers and the soft guitar solos of Massimo Michieletto and Hansi Fuchs and featuring up-tempo grooves and catchy choruses.The rest of them are a mixed bag of Melodic/AOR Rock, Folk Rock ballads ans short instrumentals in a MIKE OLDFIELD way and among them the folkier ones, featuring the majestic voice of Chicco Grosso, are propably the best with a delicate atmosphere and plenty of medieval tunes played with a melodic rockin' vibe.

Not exactly as good as Ines' debut, ''Eastern Dawning'' is likely to appeal to all fans of Neo Prog or Melodic Progressive Rock, who search for a more accesible listening among the adventurous ones.Warmly recommended.

Clintons remember McGovern for anti-hunger efforts

NEW YORK (AP) ? Former President Bill Clinton and his wife, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, say they are saddened by the passing of former presidential candidate and Sen. George McGovern.

McGovern died early Sunday in South Dakota. He ran for president in 1972, losing to President Richard Nixon.

The Clintons say in a statement that they met McGovern while campaigning for him in 1972 and their friendship endured for 40 years.

They say McGovern was "a tireless advocate for human rights and dignity" but of "all his passions, he was most committed to feeding the hungry, at home and around the world."

McGovern, a Democrat, collaborated with former Republican Sen. Bob Dole to create an international food for education and child nutrition program, for which they shared the 2008 World Food Prize.

That way the blue light can be set on and left on and when you look up or around or whatever you see its on call. When you go back inside reset the switch to off and you good to go next time.

Cost is minimal and no sophistication to go wrong. Pretty clear when light is on get ass in gear and come inside. Mount it at a height that takes into consideration small kids playing fool with you or alternatively if they aint an issue in your house mount it low so one could get to it in an emergency.

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) ? The young man whose claims of abuse began the criminal investigation that put Jerry Sandusky in prison said he contemplated suicide because authorities took so long to prosecute the former Penn State assistant football coach.

Speaking out publicly by name for the first time, Aaron Fisher said in an interview airing Friday on ABC's "20/20" that the Pennsylvania attorney general's office had told him it needed more victims before Sandusky would be charged.

Fisher first reported the abuse in 2008. Sandusky was arrested last November. Fisher said the delay made him increasingly desperate.

"I thought maybe it would be easier to take myself out of the equation," he told ABC. "Let somebody else deal with it."

Fisher, now 18, testified as Victim 1 at Sandusky's trial. He, his mother and his psychologist have co-written a forthcoming book about his ordeal.

Fisher told jurors that Sandusky approached him through a summer camp for youth sponsored by The Second Mile, a charity for at-risk youth the former coach had founded.

Physical contact began with a hand on his leg in the car, Fisher said, and he began spending nights at the Sandusky home in State College, about 30 miles from his own home in Lock Haven. Kissing and back rubbing during those overnight visits progressed to oral sex. He said he tried to distance himself from Sandusky, to no avail.

Fisher was 15 when and his mother eventually reported the abuse to the school principal, who responded that "Jerry has a heart of gold and that he wouldn't do those type of things," Fisher told ABC, repeating his trial testimony.

"They tell me to go home and think about it," he told ABC.

School officials reported Sandusky to Clinton County Children and Youth Services, which began an investigation.

As Fisher spoke out, Sandusky launched his effort to overturn his conviction, contending there wasn't enough evidence against him and the trial wasn't fair. His lawyers filed a 31-page document Thursday that attacked rulings by the judge, the closing argument by the prosecution and the speed by which he went from arrest to trial.

Sandusky wants the charges tossed out "and/or" a new trial, saying the statute of limitations had run out for many of the 45 counts for which he was convicted in June. Currently in a county jail near State College, he is awaiting transfer to the state prison system to begin serving a 30- to 60-year sentence.

"The defendant submits the court's sentence was excessive and tantamount ... to a life sentence, which the defendant submits is in violation of his rights," his lawyers wrote.

A spokesman for the attorney general's office said the Sandusky filing was under review.

Fisher and seven other young men testified against him in June, describing a range of abuse they said included fondling and oral and anal sex when they were boys.

Sandusky didn't testify at his trial but has maintained his innocence in interviews and at sentencing.

Sandusky, 68, built a reputation as one of the country's premier defensive coaches while serving under head coach Joe Paterno, including two national championships. That image was shattered last year by his arrest.

The abuse scandal rocked Penn State, bringing down Paterno and the university's president and leading the NCAA, college sports' governing body, to levy unprecedented sanctions against the university's football program.

Two Penn State administrators were charged as a result of the investigation into the Sandusky allegations, accused of lying to the grand jury that investigated Sandusky and not reporting suspected child abuse to the proper authorities. Those two officials, athletic director Tim Curley, who is on administrative leave, and retired vice president Gary Schultz, await trial in January and maintain their innocence.

Former FBI Director Louis Freeh, hired by university trustees to conduct an investigation into the university's handling of abuse complaints against Sandusky, concluded that Paterno, who died in January, along with ousted President Graham Spanier, Curley and Schultz concealed a 2001 allegation against Sandusky to protect Penn State from bad publicity.

The late coach's family, as well as Spanier, Curley and Schultz, dispute Freeh's assertions.
