DECORATING WITH MIRRORS 101 | Home Improvement Made Easy

DECORATING WITH MIRRORS 101

Designers all agree that mirrors bring light and depth to a room. Mirrors reflect the colors and the view of adjacent walls thus creating a special effect which emphasizes the mood created by these walls. If there are artworks on these walls, then the mirrors reflect the mood created by these artworks and enhances the effect they have on the viewers.

In some cases, the mirror becomes the focal point of the room. Choose a mirror that is both bold and elegant. This would suit a contemporary bedroom that has a minimalist style. Soft lights and floating nightstands on dark wood flooring contrasted by a light rug can be further enhanced by a large, bold mirror leaning almost nonchalantly on a wall emphasizing the simplicity of the room.

Add a graphic touch to a wall in a small apartment by placing a mirror behind the comfortable sofa. This can light up a dark corner and add life and drama to a gloomy area of a room with little effort. It also helps to create the illusion of space. They can also serve as works of art just by creating a sculpture of wall panels instead of just one large mirror, perhaps to serve as a modern headboard for a small bedroom in a swanky loft. Opting for a Venetian style mirror also adds elegance to an otherwise bleak room such as a simple white-tiled bathroom or adding contrast to a contemporary eclectic dining room.

Expand a room visually by adding wall-to-wall mirrors. The key to using mirrors as a design element is location and placement. Make sure they do not create undesirable reflections. Mirrors can lighten a room, enhance its luminosity and expands the room by reflecting light and views. A large, minimalist mirror can be complemented by crystal vases and bronze figurines that will definitely give a room a contemporary feel.

Group together multiple mirrors on a wall in a visually pleasing manner, treating them as art pieces. Their size and scale should be proportional to the wall space though. So avoid using small mirrors on a large wall, or a large mirror on a small wall. Or create a wall of antique mirrors or glass panels to serve as an interesting backdrop to a seating area or an exquisite painting. Add old-world glamour to the space by using vintage furniture.

Treat mirrors like works of art. They should coincide with the other pieces in the room and should be an integral part of the design style. Placement, once again is key. Mirrors are both functional and decorative pieces that can enhance the design of a room and add pizzazz to an already well-put-together space.
